Why The Frontera Fund Defends The Rights Of Latinos and Hispanics

In July 2017 the notorious former sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio, was found guilty of criminal contempt. He had been notorious not just around Arizona but across the United States for violating the rights of the people who were brought into contact with him and his deputies.

When the birther movement was started by Donald Trump in regards to where the then President Obama had been born Joe Arpaio enthusiastically joined in. That move paid off because soon after being convicted he was pardoned for his crime by Trump.

Joe Arpaio had been voted in as sheriff six times. Finally, on his seventh run, he was defeated and replaced in November 2016. He continues to be a thorn in the side of minority groups, Latinos and Hispanics in particular. One organization also stands against him which is the Frontera Fund.

There is a large number of Latinos and Hispanics in Arizona, in particular in Maricopa County. It’s near the border with Mexico which helps people settle here. It was well known that when he was sheriff Joe Arpaio would do anything he could against those who were immigrated illegally to the United States and settled in Maricopa County. He often violated their civil rights in order to punish them for being in the United States. The founders of the Frontera Fund were Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin who had their own run-ins with Joe Arpaio. They were journalists who often had articles about him written in the Phoenix New Times. One night both were arrested and put in prison because Arpaio wanted to get his hands on their reporter notes, something that is clearly against the law.

After a national outcry both were released and they consequently sued Maricopa County. They were awarded $3.7 million which they put to use by starting a fund that would help minorities who face discrimination in the state of Arizona. Joe Arpaio got away with his illegal behavior for many years and felt he was immune to the consequences of his actions. It was in the latter half of 2011 when a judge had ordered him and his deputies to stop profiling Latino drivers. The judge made it very clear this behavior had to stop. However, Arpaio refused to comply with the judge and instead they kept on profiling Latinos. It was this conduct that landed him back in court in 2013 where he claimed that he only violated the judge’s order because he didn’t understand it.

The Frontera Fund has been defending the rights of minorities in Arizona since 2007. They have helped dozens of organizations that focus on issues such as the rights of migrant workers and people who have entered the country illegally.

Since Arpaio was pardoned by Trump there seems to be little consequence to racists serving in public positions. It is due to this reason that organizations like the Frontera Fund serve such a vital purpose in defending people’s rights and exposing the misdeeds to the general public.

Jim Larkin Worked on the Union

Jim Larkin remained dedicated to the union for his entire career. He knew the union was in place to protect people, and he wanted to do everything possible to ensure the union was doing its job. He rallied to make the union the best it could be so people wouldn’t have to worry about the issues that came with it.

Since Jim Larkin knew what he was doing, he also knew he would have a chance to make things easier for people who were in those situations. While things continued to change for people around him, Jim Larkin was making the industry better on his own. It was his way of doing things to make the union the best it could be.

Even when Jim Larkin was working toward making things better for the people who were in the union, he still had some issues that came from the things he was doing. There were many people who did not support the opportunities he had.

They wanted to see him fail even though he had done nothing wrong, but just wanted to make it better. He tried his best to fight against all of those people so he would have a chance to continue improving the union.

As things continued to change around the world thanks to the wars, Jim Larkin went to the United States. While he was there, he was protesting in a way that was detrimental to others. He got in some trouble in the country which made things even harder on him.

While he was working to make things better for everyone, he lost some of the original vision he had for success on his own. It made things harder for Jim Larkin to change so he would have a chance to make the industry better while he was doing different things.

Even though Jim Larkin had done a lot for the unions, he still had a lot of work to do. He tried his best to make things better for people who were in situations that the union was not protective of.

He chose to make things better for people so they would have a chance to enjoy the opportunities they had. It allowed him the opportunity to make things better even when he was not working in the same union as they were. It also gave him the experience that would change his outlook on the union.

Protections for Human Rights are Being Sought by the ACLU and Partnering Organizations

When the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) becomes involved in a case, it is at a point where it’s deemed vital to not only the victim’s rights, but also imperative to the rights of all American citizens. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey: http://www.laceyandlarkinfronterafund.org/about-lacey-larkin-frontera-fund/michael-lacey/

The ACLU was introduced to society during the 1920’s during a time of anti-war protest. During that era, the primary focus for the organization was supporting citizen’s rights with freedom of speech and other valid concerns having to do with First Amendment rights. Since that time the ACLU has evolved into one of the largest civil rights organization in the country.

Throughout the country, there are countless of stories relating to hundreds of thousands of immigrants being detained through the U.S. detention system. Detainees have been locked up and have been exposed to inhumane and brutal conditions. The ACLU believes that liberty in the Unites States should be afforded to everyone who arrives in the country and that detention should be only considered as an absolute last resort.

The organization has decisively established that locking people up is contrary to common sense in America and completely against the fundamental values created to show decency towards humans regardless of nationality.

With over 300 staff attorneys throughout the nation, the ACLU has prepared itself to defend the human rights through the court system, legislative process and directly within the communities. The non-profit organization has an unyielding position on the U.S. Constitution which promises that there will be liberty for everyone within the country. The ACLU has partnered with other human rights organizations to file a lawsuit challenging the legal authority of the Executive Order signed by President Trump on the travel ban from various countries.

The case stems on the fact that the ACLU, and its partners, believe that the Executive Order violates the U.S. Constitution as well as the First Amendment that prohibits the government from establishing a distinction on religion. The lawsuit was filed in the state of Maryland and is supported by the National Immigration Law Center.

Since 2013, the Lacey and Larkin Foundation has provided specific resource information in order for citizens of Arizona to prepare themselves as the policies on immigration undergo reform. The state of Arizona has one of the largest populations of immigrants in the country. The Lacey and Larkin Foundation works alongside many organizations to support the community including working with the ACLU of Arizona.

The Lacey and Larkin Foundation was founded by Michael Lacy and Jim Larkin who serve the public’s interest through their philanthropy efforts. Both Michael and Jim are local journalists and have been awarded the humanitarian award for their tireless efforts to support immigrants within the Arizona community.

The foundation was first established with a donation provided by Michael and Jim after a long fought battle of their First Amendment rights with the U.S. Supreme Court, wining a $3.7 million settlement.

Through the efforts of advocacy by the Lacey and Larkin Foundation, and the ACLU, human rights will be protected.

The Name of Jim Larkin Still A “Big Thing” in Dublin

Irish union and social activist Jim “Big Jim” Larkin died more than six decades ago but his name continues to resonate in the city of Dublin. It was there in the Irish capital that his efforts to organize and unionize the working class is legendary.

James Larkin was born in 1876 in Liverpool, England. His parents were immigrants from Ireland and toiled away in the slums of Liverpool. Life was harsh. Young Jim Larkin attended school in the mornings but worked in the afternoon to help his family earn income.

Larkin was 14 when his father died. That meant his formal schooling was over and his life of full-time work began. He worked at a variety of jobs. By 1903 he was employed as a docker where he achieved the status of foreman.

By this time Jim Larkin had already dabbled considerably in socialism. He joined the Independent Labor Party – a party established in 1893 that represented working-class folks. Although a foreman, Larkin enthusiastically took part in labor strikes. He soon became an organizer for the National Union of Dock Labourers.

Despite considerable success in union organizing both in Ireland and Scotland, Jim Larkin eventually broke with the Dock Labourer Union over inner conflicts on strategies and goals. He continued his work within the labor movement, however.

Larkin is perhaps best remembered for his role in the Dublin Lockout of 1913. This was a major dispute between 20,000 workers and about 300 employers across a variety of industries in Dublin. The conflict that ensued is still considered the most severe industrial dispute in Irish history.

A lockout of workers lasted seven months. Factory owners attempted hire scabs to keep their operations going while picket lines of strikers clashed with them, as well as police and “private henchmen” hired by factory owners. The dispute was long, often violent and swept up a variety of players, from the Catholic Church to the Irish government.

In the end, Larkin and his union allies were defeated in the Dublin lockout. However, the events eventually led to future changes and significantly more favorable labor laws.
