The Woman Behind Roc Nation – Desiree Perez

Gone are the days of the stereotypical image of an old man in a suit managing musical talent. Now women of all ages are making their presence known behind the scenes as well as with a microphone in hand. In recent years, women have been proving that they can be successful in managerial and executive roles as well as being successful entertainers. In 2017, Executive of the Year went to a woman – Julie Greenwald of Atlantic Records.

Another successful woman in the music industry is long-time Jay-Z affiliate Desiree Perez. She’s made her name known by being involved in a variety of ventures by SC Enterprises, one of Jay-Z’s companies.

In 2009, only a year after the formation of Jay-Z’s new record label, Roc Nation, Perez took over the role of COO. Since then she has been in charge of organizing tours, events and other much needed activities.

One of her biggest deals was one made with Sprint. With her notorious negotiation skills, she was able to convince Sprint to invest 200 million dollars into Roc-Natoin’s Spotify competitor Tidal. The details of the deal include Sprint offering Jay-Z’s “4:44” album as a free download to their subscribers. This lead to the album going platinum before it was even available for purchase.

The promotional tour for “4:44” has seen an increase from Jay-Z’s previous album tour. The increased revenue from the new tour could be attributed to a 200 million dollar touring sponsorship made possible by Perez’s work with Live Nation – an squity parner with Roc Nation.
